Week 20 (10/02/25) - (14/02/25)

On Monday, i learnt how to sew in a peplum to a circle skirt pattern. I think this end product turned out well for me since i was able to successfully apply the horsehair to the skirt and create a continuous look that gave shape to the circle skirt. I think the use of a larger horsehair allowed my end product to be clearly defined and smooth across the hem. I have acquired a smaller width of horsehair that i can use for more samples when it comes to my experimentation with Lareen.

During my free period, i worked on developing my mood board because i hadn't been able to complete it over the weekend (my printer didn't work) which lead me to getting started on it Monday morning before college. I did manage to get a completed product but i think i am going to create a different one as i think the one i had finished wasn't very good and the placement and use of different things wasn't necessarily needed. There was also a bad use of colour on one part of the mood board that i think takes away from the rest of the composition.

In photography it was the last day to take photos for the phrase 'something your not' which i had done a few weeks before so Calvin tasked us with cutting and sticking some props together for a future photoshoot idea that he had for us. This meant that i didn't learn much through the lesson but i did get quite a bit done in terms of making what i needed to.

Tuesday began with me finishing off the 7 experiments i needed to get done for this lesson and i spent the rest of the lesson analyzing and evaluating all the different experiments i had done. I found this process simple enough for me to do and i also found that i was able to effectively evaluate each of the experiments with a decent amount of detail. However, some thing i noticed was that i wanted to write more for some but didn't have the space so next time i think i will space out my different things that i make more so i can have more space even if i don't use all of it.

In Sam's lesson we went through and presented our research into a garment that we had to find out the ethical and sustainable state of a company. I think there were many good presentations that made me feel like i could have done more to display my knowledge and back up what i say (i.e. pictures + more research in general). Overall, i think i was able to successfully present information that i had found on the company that my garments came from and the place it was made.

We continued to learn and develop our skills via the use of boning on Wednesday morning, learning how it is placed what methods we can use to create structure with it and how to cover the ends so it doesn't stab into someone's skin. This has helped me to understand a key component that can be found in quite a lot of high end couture fashion and i believe it is a skill i can put to good use in any of the upcoming assignments that i have this year and next. I did find it tricky in some places like trying to make a channel while making sure there are no raw edges and all of the folds are sewn neatly with a clean stitch or covering the ends with fabric as an alternative to plastic caps which sometimes can't be done in cases like metal boning or other similar materials which cannot be sewn through. It has allowed me to think more critically about the materials and processes I'm using and question myself about the most effective or possible outcomes.

During Sam's lesson on Friday i developed a new skill of boro stitching which i believe will not only help me for this current project once i decide my theme (if it is appropriate) but also in the future because i want to become more sustainable and I could come across some of my clothes that end up having holes in them and fixing them up with this technique. The process can be done in multiple different ways but to me i find that they are all fairly simple to understand and complete which turns out an effective finish overall no matter what type of hole there is.
