Reflection of my work (Sketchbook 1 - visual recording)

When I first started this project I wasn’t sure where to start because this was my first official (big) sketchbook that I have ever completed.

While I researched Liberty’s, I found that their designs vary a lot between all the different fashion designers that the company works with. Some are more simple while others are very intricate with small delicate details that combine to create a delicate pattern. Some are realistic with slight gradients and natural tones while others are bold and abstract, using colours that scream out because they are so bright. There are many different textures found in the clothing that liberty’s sell all that work perfectly well for the designs that pair with them.

In my work I wanted to capture some of the looks and feelings you get from the designs at liberty’s and I think I was somewhat successful in that aspect, however I feel as though the designs that my work reminds me of keeps coming up over and over again rather than me being inspired by a vast array of the designs. I think if I used different materials and methods when experimenting I could have showed a better understanding of the full range of work at liberty’s.

When I got feedback when talking to my teacher about my work, my key thing to think about is working with different mediums. I wanted to work more with ink and bleach in my sketchbook but I could only do that work at college because I didn’t have ink and bleach at home. In the future I need to be able to have access to these things if I want to be able to do more work with them, this is a fault on my end.

While I didn’t have a lot of experimentation with different mediums, I still believe my designs came out well off and I think they capture the different essences of the topics I have chosen (Fruit & Veg, Plants, Insects and Fish).

During my experimentation with the fish I think I captured that topic the best since my method of drawing tends to be messy anyways and I think it makes it look more like the fish are underwater since it gives the drawings a bit of a haze.

I think that the topic that most resembles the research that I did for them is the plants topic, especially with Ebony G. Patterson since it has the colours and the detail spread out between them.

Overall, after this sketchbook is finished and I move onto the next one I want to work on more experimentation, try to look for things I’ve not really done much of and do more, not just a few drawings but a variation of drawings with the mediums. I also want to do more experiments focusing on one thing at a time as through out my sketchbook I have one or two drawings of one thing and then I move onto the next thing.
